The contract was awarded to GJBS by HMGoG as a design and build project involving the demolition of existing buildings, site clearance, enabling works and construction of a new concrete and steel framed sporting facility at Europa point, designed to have minimal visual impact on the surrounding area in order to fit in with the surrounding buildings adjacent the University of Gibraltar.
Working closely with the Department of Culture and the Museum of Gibraltar to ensure the Heritage assets in the area were maintained and incorporated into the works including the preservation of a Unique WWII concrete bunker encased in a room within the building which will allow this to be accessed and viewed by the public for the future.
Due to its location on the southern tip of Gibraltar the environmental, sustainability and climate change issues played a key role in the design and building of the project. In consultation with ministers and the department for the environment, HMGoG invested heavily in renewable energy at the Europa sports complex covering the entire roof space at Europa with photovoltaic solar panels, capable of powering the facility when running at full capacity and in conjunction with Gibelec, returning electricity back into the grid when not being used to capacity.
The Stadium was partially completed in July 2019 & hosted the International Island Games 2019 and the Gibraltar Music Festival in September 2019. The new facility, although owned by HMGoG, will be the new home for the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union.
The Gibraltar Cricket Association will also call Europa its new home with new cricket oval indoor practice nets with pitch vision ball tracking and state of the art training aids already installed and in use. Outdoor practice nets and a new cricket pavilion, clubhouse, offices, groundsman storage areas, designated scoreboards and bar areas.
The Gibraltar Squash Association with six new squash courts, clubhouse facilities and bar, office and storage rooms and 80 seat tiered stand are also set up and using the new facilities at Europa.
